Visiting Nursing Association 2021 Employee of the Year: Kapri Johnson

Released: 6/9/2022 6:00:00 AM

Congratulations to Kapri Johnson, home health nurse for Erie Team One, on being selected the 2021 Employee of the Year for the Visiting Nursing Association of Western New York.

Kapri Johnson joined the VNA in June of 2019 as a newly graduated nurse, a member of the first cohort of the VNA’s Nurse Residency Program. Since then, said her manager, “Kapri has grown into her role of professional nurse seamlessly. Many of her patients will move their visit to ensure she will be the one completing their care.”

She is always willing to take on overtime without complaint, and pays her way forward by mentoring student nurses and second-cohort residency grads. Johnson was originally nominated for Employee of the Month based on her precise and thorough documentation. “The detail that Kapri puts into her start-of-care notes is very important and paints such a very real picture of the patient,” said a member of the Clinical Documentation team. “When you look at Kapri’s notes, you feel like you have seen the patient personally.”

Johnson’s preceptor in the VNA’s Nurse Residency Program said that “From the beginning, Kapri was always inquisitive and could easily build a rapport with our patients; two vital qualities of a home care nurse.” Her “calm demeanor” and “can-do attitude” not only facilitated the learning process, these qualities made her a valuable asset to the team right out of the gate. “I can see that Kapri is on her way to being a great educator and advocate for our patients," she said. Watching Johnson's career trajectory from novice nurse to "rising star," all the while attending school full time, has been both professionally and personally rewarding, she added.

One of her long-term patients was brought to tears recalling Johnson’s care for her, phoning Johnson’s manager repeatedly to sing her praises. She called her “one of the most beautiful people in the world,” saying she is feeling better than ever thanks to Johnson’s healing expertise and compassion. She said she has had many professionals transition through her home over the years, but no one ever made her feel so important.

Prior to the COVID pandemic, Johnson volunteered at Rochester Presbyterian Home on the Dementia Unit, and she is currently pursuing a Doctorate of Nursing Practice in Psychiatric Mental Health Nursing in UB’s School of Nursing.

Thank you, Kapri Johnson, for all you do in caring for others. We are proud to name you the 2021 Employee of the Year for the Visiting Nursing Association.
